Lung cancer- waiting for full diagnosis

Having been diagnosed with suspected lung cancer based on a contrast CT Scan, I am now waiting to complete and get my PET scan and lung function test results. The waiting is excruciating as the end results could equal so many different outcomes. I have all sorts of unwanted nonsense going through my head. My wife has been extremely supportive but hard to articulate how I am feeling. Any tips for coping with the waiting would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and I know how hard waiting for results can be. My best advice would be to try and keep busy doing things that you enjoy to keep your mind from spending too much time on the 'what ifs'.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the lung cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your suspected diagnosis into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Thank you so much Anne. Your time and guidance is greatly appreciated!

    1. Hello sorry to hear of your troubles, no matter what keep positive now this might sound silly but it’s only positive stuff will get you through no one or anything can help with the wait it’s by far the worst bit in my opinion, when I was at the stage with my lung cancer , I was climbing the walls at first but I started sorting my life out little things like clearing cupboards out just to keep myself occupied the bad thoughts won’t go away but I found this helped me good luck keep positive
  • Thank you for the advice. I am doing my best to distract myself with the things I enjoy. Walking is my go to and certainly helping. Hope your own situation is not all bad!
