New to Melanoma, confused and anxious

Good morning all,

so I am new to the group and just wanted to say hi.

My wife received her diagnosis of Melanoma on the 23/12/2024 (great Christmas ah).
We had our first appointment with her consultant last night after receiving the news and to be honest we are not much clearer on the situation.
The only thing we currently understand is the depth of the melanoma at 4.3mm, which sounds extremely deep to me.

Sam has her first surgery booked for Monday coming along with blood tests and CAT scan. She will then need a further surgery to remove a larger section of tissue plus the consultant was talking about some lymph node exploratory. To be honest the consultant didn’t fill me with confidence but my head was so scrambled.

If anyone has had a similar diagnosis, it would be really helpful to chat on here and understand what is going on.

Thank you for reading this and sorry if it’s a little mixed up and scrambled.

Tony

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and I was diagnosed with melanoma 8 years ago so I understand the confusion a diagnosis can bring.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join us over in the melanoma group, which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

After my excision biopsy I had a wide local excision (WLE) and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) which are likely to be the "surgery to remove a larger section of tissue plus ......... some lymph node exploratory" which you mentioned. I'm happy to chat with you about what that involves but I'll wait for you to join and post in the melanoma group first.

It would be great if you could put something about your wife's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
