My husband has cancer and is having to decide whether to have more surgery or to refuse further treatment. The surgery could be a cure but has quality of life affecting side effects, mainly severe lymphoedema. He is not coping well emotionally and I am finding the strain is getting to me too. How do people make such major decisions?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

Having to make treatment decisions can be very tough but one way is talk to others within this community, who have the same type of cancer as your husband, to see what type of treatment they had and how they coped with it.

The online community is divided up into cancer specific groups, so can I recommend that you look through this list to choose the appropriate one for your husband. Then, once you've joined the group, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your husband's diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Thank you for the reply. My husband has a rare type of groin cancer but I will see if it's on the list!

  • Do you know the name of the cancer and I can have a look too?
