  • Hi there, I was told I need a mastectomy last week also so I’m sorry I don’t have answers for you, but just wanted to send you love because it sounds like you are worried.
Are you having reconstruction? Apparently they can do mine at the same time.

  • Hi Nif thank you very much for even reading my query.

Reconstruction? Yes. The plan for now is implant because i might undergo chemo/radiotherapy after. How are you? How are dealing with your news? Im generally fine, i mean  physically but then all of a sudden a tear might come up and i remember i am not 100% okay

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that you've just been diagnosed with breast cancer and it's natural to be scared. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2022 but after having a lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy I'm now out the other side!

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the breast cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support. There you'll find lots of people who have had a mastectomy and can tell you what to expect.

To join, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Thank you very much for letting me know. If you dont mind can i ask How are you now? How did you feel after the surgery and the rest of the treatments?

  • I'm fully recovered and enjoying life now thanks

I had surgery first, which I quickly recovered from. Obviously felt a bit tired for the first couple of days but made sure I did the exercises I was given. I also went out for a gentle walk, only for about an hour, each day...weather permitting.

Unfortunately one of the sentinel lymph nodes that were removed at the same time as the lumpectomy showed micro deposits of cancer. The oncologist gave me the choice of whether to have chemo or not as I was borderline. I decided that I wanted to throw everything at it so had chemo. Fortunately, I didn't suffer any major side effects.

Once the chemo finished I then had 10 days of radiotherapy which, for me, was the easiest of the three treatments.

I now have a 6 monthly infusion of Zometa, which helps protect your bones from the cancer returning.

Everyone's treatment plan is tailored to their own type of breast cancer so your treatment plan might not follow mine.

Happy to answer any questions you have.
