I'm 3 years in to inflammatory breasts cancer, so I had all the normal treatments and and now on the 6 monthly infusions and almost 3 years post op.

Anyway after being uncomfortable and unable to have a reconstruction I decided to go completely flat. I had a phone consultation and my first surgeon agreed that if that's what I wanted she was happy. So I'm in the day unit this morning and another doctor I had seen before was really nasty to me, and in front of a colleague and a ward full of other women. She told me that she wasn't happy doing this and strongly thought I would regret it, she also said that I can't keep going to her for revisions. She left me to think about it and I cried, she was cruel but one of the nurses saw how upset I was and talked me out of going home in tears. I stuck by my guns and grudgingly did my operation. Before I came home my discharge notes were read to me and almost word for word she bitches about me again even saying I would continue going back because I'm over weight. Am I right to be hurt and upset by this or should I just shut up and hope she isn't right??

  • omg I am so sorry to read this :-(. Of course you are not wrong to feel the way you do.  There are options and you have chosen one.  What medical people think of your decision is neither here nor there.  They should be respectful because it's your body and you are living with your decision every day going forward.  Perspectives on weight aren't relevant either.  Medical notes should state fact, not opinion.

It's nice to see a nurse showed empathy to you.   I hope you don't have to see the opinionated person again - I think I would ask to see someone else!

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but sorry to hear about the nonsense you have been dealing with.

This New to Community area is like our reception desk where we look to try and direct you to the best part of the Community for you to get support.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend that you look to join and put up your own post in our dedicated Breast Cancer Support Group.

This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support. To connect in with the group please click on the link below…….

            Breast cancer

……. and once the group page opens you will see a [Black - Click to Join - Banner] at the bottom of the page, click in this box and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.

You can then introduce yourself to the group by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [+] in the top right of the group page.

The Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow 3 working days for a reply.

Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
