At the young age of 82 I was recently disgnosed with Sarcoma cancer and separately Bowel cancer. I have undergone major surgery for both over the past 10 months and am pleased to say I am still upright and slowly getting back to walking my dogs:-)
However, following bowel surgery I have been fitted with a stoma and I am having problems getting my poo to drop into the stoma bag. My poo is like putty in consistency and justs fills the top of the bag and the rest of the bag is empty!
Has anyone had similar problems and if so how do I make my poo soft enough to drop in the bag?
I have tried all the suggestions from the stoma nurse but so far no luck .
Any suggestions?
Hi Peter S. and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
That's great to read that you're gradually getting back to walking your dogs.
As the online community is divided into different support groups I'm going to recommend that you join the ileostomy, colostomy and stoma support group which is a great place to ask your question and share experiences with others who have a stoma.
To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Hi Peter, I had this problem to start with but I put some baby oil inside the bag via the hole you cut out and use the little blue filter covers that come with SenSura bags and this has helped. Blow into the bag before you put it on and this will keep it from flattening too much and causing the output to “pancake” at the top of the bag. If the bag blows up too much you can release the air by pulling up the filter cover a little.
