Evening all,
Just had a lot of radiotherapy. at Guy's (an excellent place, clean, cheerful staff, free tea!)
I thought I would drop by and say hello and to thank everyone at MacMillan that has made the whole awful process (prostate cancer) easier.
I've had longcovid for 4+ years, the full monty (complete fatigue, brain fog, weird pains everywhere, etc), then the cancer came along.
The meds were strange (hot and cold flushes, feeling weepy every other day), am weak as a kitten and still am, but at least I can potter down the street even if it is at ¼ of my pre-2020 speed!
Good luck to everyone.
Brian
Hi BrianB and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but sorry to hear about your journey.
Navigating the post cancer journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from people who have walked or are walking the ‘exact same' journey can help a lot. (I have a completely different cancer).
This New to Community area is like our reception desk where we look to try and direct you to the best part of the Community for you to get support. The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend that you look to join and put up your own post in our dedicated Prostate Cancer Support Group.
This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support. To connect in with the group please click on the link below…….
……. and once the group page opens you will see a [Black - Click to Join - Banner] at the bottom of the page, click in this box and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.
You can then introduce yourself to the group by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [+] in the top right of the group page.
You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.
The Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.
Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.
Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
Thanks Mike,
At the moment, as I organize to move into sheltered accommodation I am focused on a few practical matters, which are annoying and could normally do if I were fit and working (but ain't):
I need a single bed and new mattress (for health reasons) urgently, and a volunteer DIYer to put in some screws to fit my curtain rails (which will allow me to sleep when the curtains are fitted), it is about a 10 minute job.
The cancer treatment (and other special meds) have left me doddering around like a very old man (am 65 but feel like 95+ most of the time).
And moving home in the middle of cancer treatment is very, very stressful. Particularly when you’re doing it on your own and broke.
But such is life, at least I had a nice cuppa this morning!
Good luck,
Brian.
Hi Brian BrianB …… navigating the cancer journey and ‘normal’ life’ stuff can be a challenge.
You may want to call the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 00 00…… as they may have some information in their database with regards to any charitable organisations in your area who can help you.
Thanks Mike,
They are on my list to call again today.
There are plenty of organizations but sadly many are more concerned with process (I use to be a civil servant once) than the end result and the timescale is very, very tight.
I take up the tenancy on Monday, 28th Oct. I want to move in as quick as possible. I only need a bed and a kettle, initially (I am a simple old man).
Nowadays most people's timescale are in weeks not days which in this case is an issue.
Thanks for the encouragement.
Cheers, Brian
