Hi everyone. I hope you are well or dealing with getting better or just being less not so well.
My Mother has liver Cancer and we've been visited by the brilliant people at the local Hospice who are just amazing.
Not sure where to start with this but grateful if someone can reach out and give some further advice or experiences so we can better manage her condition.
Myles.
Hi Myles LBF and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis.
A cancer diagnosis in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' cancer type or support challenges will help you a lot……. I have a completely different type of cancer and treatment journey.
This New to Community area is like our reception desk where we look to direct you to the best part of the Community for you to get support. The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you look to join and post in our…
……. support group.
This group is a safe places to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same support journey.
As for the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your mum and indeed yourself you may benefit from joining and posting in our……
Supporting someone with incurable cancer
……. support groups where you will connect with a wide range of members navigating the exact same support challenges.
To connect with a group click on the “Bold Italic Links” I have created above …… then once the group page opens click in the [Black - Click to Join - Banner] that appears at the bottom of the page and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.
When you are ready……. you can introduce yourself by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [+] in the top right of the group page.
You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.
It is an emotional time supporting family so you might find this Macmillan information your feelings when someone has cancer helpful as well as this link getting help with your emotions.
The Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.
Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.
Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
Thanks Mike,
It is comforting to hear others, like yourself, have experiences to share. I hope your particular type of Cancer is treatable and that you have an enjoyable journey to recovery.
Unfortunately my Mother has gone through surgery in 2019 for left upper lobe breast Cancer. Described as 2 D Cell batteries which were removed during a 7 hour procedure in Southampton.
I'm happy to report this was successful and no further treatment needed.
Since then she developed breast Cancer which is being treated with hormonal medication. This is doing well and that tumour is shrinking.
Unfortunately, though not secondary as I understand it, she was diagnosed with primary liver Cancer earlier this year.
Owing to heart failure and another list of medical conditions treatment options were limited. No Chemo, Radio, or other types would be acceptable. Because of her heart condition, surgery became a no no.
The only option was to do a (excuse my spelling as the notes are in my office) an ablation of the liver lesion with general anasthetic.
We travelled under assisted arrangements from Jersey to Southampton to pre assess her suitability for this procedure. Alas that was finalised as not possible.
So we find ourselves with poorly Mum, liver lesion hasn't got bigger but she'll have no more treatment or scans.
We are now in the lap of the God's and I'm so grateful to have people like you listening to our situation as up until now I thought it was just us going through this.
Thanks,
Myles.
Hi again Myles, your mum’s journey and indeed the family’s is like many others…. heartbreaking.
I have been on my incurable cancer journey for over 25 years….. having been treated for 2 types of very rare Non Hodgkins Lymphoma…… but I am still here keeping ahead of the ‘C’
Do connect in with the Carers only and Supporting someone with incurable cancer support groups where you will connect with other members navigating the exact same support challenges.
Hi Mike,
It's so pleasing to hear you are surviving non Hodkgins Lymphoma after such a long journey and myself and my family hope you enjoy many more years of good health.
Please accept my personal thanks and will follow your advice in the previous posts.
