Possible Lymphoma?

Hi,

I don't know where to go really or who to talk to. My son has developed extreme itching in his legs over the last week. There is no obvious rash or any reason behind the itching. We have been to a&e, OOH and the GP as the itch is so intense he can't cope. We have a blood test arranged, I was wondering if anything would show up in his bloods if this was a possible lymphoma? Also, if anyone did have the itching as a first symptom how long did this last before other symptoms appeared? At the moment, he doesn't have any other symptoms apart from the fact over the last year his legs sometimes give way (about one every month/two months) especially if he's exhausted.

  • Hi  and warm welcome to the Macmillan Community although sorry that you had to find us and especially sorry to hear about your concerns about your son. I am Mike and I help out around our Lymphoma groups.

I was diagnosed way back in 1999 at 43 with a rare (8 in a million) incurable but treatable type of Lymphoma and then again with a second type of rare (4 in a million) Lymphoma in late 2013......so I most definitely appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well.

The Diagnosis of Lymphoma can at times be complicated and unfortunately can take some time.

On the whole Lymphoma does not show up in any blood tests..... this is crazy as it is a blood cancer!!!. But blood tests may indicate that there is something that needs to be looked at further.

There can be various Symptoms of Lymphoma and Itching is one of the symptoms......... if it goes on for a prolonged period of time it needs to be checked out further

In my case back in 1999 I only had a small developing rash that then developed to a raised plaque....... my great GP tried everything in his tool box but after 9 months I was referred to Dermatology and this was when I eventually found out I had a rare skin Lymphoma.

Your son needs to keep working with his GP.

    Always around to chat ((hugs))

  • Thank you so much for your warm welcome and sharing your story.

I am very concerned that if nothing shows via bloods that they will just leave him to it. It's very distressing watching how uncomfortable the itching is making him and is leading to missed days off school as he's unable to concentrate. Fingers crossed we will get some answers by next week

    Thanks again x

  • Hi again  having 4 granddaughters (8 to 12 years old) skin issues have come and gone.

As I said..... if the itching continues for 2 weeks or more further in depth investigations needs to be done...... regardless if his bloods are clear..... as there must be an explanation/cause.

In our granddaughters case...... after careful elimination we eventually came to the conclusion that they had all developed reactions to various washing liquids, foods and over the summer insect and even reactions to the sun!!

......... if his GP uses up all the diagnosis and treatment tools available and there is no improvement then a referral to Pediatrics and/or Dermatology is in order.
