My mum has recently been diagnosed with cancer and I don't understand why I don't feel devastated by it I actually feel nothing just now. We don't know what to expect and I don't seem to be able to process things I don't even know what to say to her.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

There is no right or wrong way to feel when you discover that someone has had a cancer diagnosis.

The online community is divided into different support forums so I'm going to recommend that you join the family and friends forum which is a safe and supportive place to discuss your emotions.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

As for what to say to your mum, I'm sure she wouldn't want you to act any differently to how you normally do. You might find this information from Macmillan on how to talk to someone with cancer useful to have a look through.

It would be great if you could put something about your mum's diagnosis into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

    Sending virtual ((hugs))
