Hi

My husband had throat cancer stage 1 in March this year. The tumor was at the base of his tongue and went to 1 lymph node which is how he found it (a lump). He was lucky not to need chemo or radiotherapy so had robotic surgery to remove the tumor at the base of his tongue and neck dissection (27 lymph nodes removed) . He has numbness from his ear lobe, his neck and top of his shoulder. Our consultant has advised this should go once the nerves have repaired (6-12 months) but also said it may not all go. My husband gets a tight feeling under his jaw and neck. The consultant said with time this will soften and loosen, can anyone relate to these sensations? Also he feels like something is going to ping in his back from his shoulder, another horrible sensation! Can anyone relate to these weird feelings? Are they normal?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I can understand you wanting to find others who may have had similar sensations to your husband post surgery, so I'm going to recommend that you join the head and neck cancer forum which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your husband's diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
