Newly diagnosed with lung cancer

Feel like my life has been turned totally upside down. Had just celebrated a year since I had had a stroke and worked really hard on making a full recovery. Was feeling fitter than I'd been in years and then bam got what I thought was a chest infection that just wasn't getting better. Got sent for a chest x-ray and phoned up pretty much straight away to get a CT scan. Huge shock when report showed advanced lung cancer. Had a tough few weeks having investigations and diagnosis confirmed as adenocarcinoma of lung. Now got a wait for tumour markers and an appointment with oncologist. I'm really breathless and awake a lot with coughing although medication and draining fluid off my chest has helped a bit. Trying hard to get my head round it all and coping with other people's interest and emotions is really hard. Hoping to get support and insight from fellow lung cancer patients as current uncertainty is really scary.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the Community but sorry to hear about your diagnoses.

Navigating the cancer journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from people who have walked the ‘exact same' cancer journey can help a lot. I was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a very rare incurable blood cancer so I do remember those early days well.

This New to Community area is like our reception desk where we look to try and direct you to the best part of the Community for you to get support. The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you join and post in our dedicated Lung Cancer support group. This will be a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

To connect in with the group please click on the link below…….

           Lung Cancer

…… then once the group page opens click in the [Black - Click to Join - Banner] that appears at the bottom of the page and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.

When you are ready……. you can introduce yourself by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [ + ] in the top right of the group page.

You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

You may find it helpful to call the Macmillan Support Line open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow 3 working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and give support to all the family.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.

  • Thanks Mike. That's really helpful. We do have a local Maggie's centre - need to pluck up courage to go I think. I know the value of peer support through my stroke experience - really helped me with my recovery.

  • Our local Maggie’s is amazing, go visit your one and sit at the table and chat ((hugs))

  • Hi, I too am newly diagnosed, but mine is colon cancer. It’s such a lot to process and very scary, but I hope having support from fellow cancer patients will help both you and me. You’re not alone in this, and we’re all trying to make sense of our difficult situation. Keep the faith and keep in touch Heart

  • Thank you. I have just done it Pray

  • Hello. Wishing you well with your treatment. It's the waiting to get all the test results back before can decide on treatment that I'm really struggling with at the moment.
