Hi everybody. I have just joined The Community and trying to work out how to approach my alleged problem.

If I sound flippant it is because I always have been, and don't see why I should change.

I have prostate cancer with metastatic infiltration in my spine.... .and  am my wife's carer.

I feel I am in good hands with the medical teams that support me and must keep caring. So my question is "what and who have other people in a similar state found helps?"

Dave

  • Hi Dave  and a very warm welcome to the Community but sorry to hear about your diagnoses and the challenges around being your wife’s caregiver.

Navigating the cancer journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from people who have walked the ‘exact same' cancer journey can help a lot. (I have a completely different cancer).

The New to Community is like our reception desk where we look to try and direct you to the best part of the Community for you to get support. The Community is actually divided into dedicated Cancer Support Groups (Discussion Rooms)…..    but I do see that you have already joined our dedicated Prostate Cancer support group. This will be a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

To connect in with the group click on this link Point down

…… then once the group page opens you can introduce yourself by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [ + ] in the top right of the group page.

You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

You may find it helpful to call the Macmillan Support Line open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and give support to all the family.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.

  • Hello Dave, and welcome from someone else with metastatic prostate cancer, to quote you, whoopee, Dave i have also been a carer but before my diagnosis. Regarding caring, Find out what help is available, talk to your GP about having support ready for when it's needed, and don't forget to look after yourself. I tried to do too much all by myself the first time i was caring and ended up in hospital and i as reasonably healthy and young, so please give yourself a little time every day to switch off and relax, It will help you be a better carer. As Mike (Thehighlander) has said, joining The prostate cancer forum, would help you, there are many guys, girls and couples on there who understand what you are going through  and your diagnosis and would happily share their experiences of living with metastatic prostate cancer and how they manage it. Best wishes

    Eddie

  • Thanks, Mike and Eddie. After I submitted my post I removed a certain word that Eddie quoted as I thought it might upset some people.

  • Hi datmanbu, that was a very nice gesture on your part to remove the word, though I'm sure most people would understand the context it as written in was not intended to offend. I see you have joined the prostate cancer forum, i look forward to seeing you there.
