Newly diagnosed - what now?

Hi,

A family member has been diagnosed with Liver Cancer last week, and was advised that it was terminal with a 12 month timeline.

Unfortunately they were on their own for the appointment and for the delivery of this news. We are very unclear what the next steps to expect are. They were advised that this is now handed back over to the local GP. We have so far heard nothing else, and are just waiting for the GP to contact with an appointment.

Is this correct? I would have expected to be transferred to some sort of palliative care team? We are all clearly devastated by this news and have no idea how to move forward or what anything means. There are so many questions but we have no real idea what happens now?

Thanks in advance for any information or advise shared?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your relative has recently been told that they have an incurable cancer and it's natural to have lots of questions.

The online community is divided into different support forums so I'm going to recommend that you join the supporting someone with incurable cancer forum where you can ask questions around practical issues, palliative care, etc.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your relative's diagnosis into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
