Hi, im new, i have joined for my hubby.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

    As the online community is divided into different support forums, if you could tell me what brings you here I could give you a link to forums which could help answer questions and provide support to you. I'm presuming that your husband has been diagnosed with cancer, which I know will be a great shock for you both.

  • Hi, thank you for responding.

    Hubby was taken into hospital by ambulance on 14th Jan 24 with a high temp and severe right sided abdominal pain. A ct showed ruptured appendix and peritonitis. He had emergency surgery to remove appendix. The appendictomy took longer than it should as a colorectal surgeon was called in to remove a small section of his caecum was also removed. Around 3 weeks ago, we attended an outpatient appt with the colorectal surgeon who told us that when the appendix was tested, it was found to have cancer. Hubby was referred for a colonoscopy, ct and mri liver. Colonoscopy was clear but we've had no results for the ct and mri. He has a consultation on wednesday 20th march 24 with a colorectal surgeon at Good Hope. Im wondering whether the rupture of his appendix would have caused cancer cells to spread into his abdomen. Heated chemotherapy was mentioned at the outpatient appt and hubby was told he would have this. Can HiPec be carried out without CRS?

  • Hi again

    It's natural to have lots of questions and 'what ifs' at this stage but you should know a lot more after this week's meeting with the colorectal surgeon.

    There is a forum here for people with pseudomyxoma peritonei (cancer of the appendix) which you might want to join to ask your questions. Clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there. Once you've joined you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and also join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

    You might also like to join the carers only forum which is a safe and supportive place to discuss your worries and emotions with others who have a loved one living with cancer. Again, clicking on the link will take your there.

  • Hi MrsJ45

    ask your husband’s oncology surgeon whether the appendix bursting has caused any Mucinous cancer in the abdomen (Psuedomyxoma Peritonei or PMP).

    if this consultant is at your local hospital it may be worth asking them to refer you to 1 of the 2 specialist centres for Appendix Cancer, these are

    * the Christie’s in Manchester

    * the Basingstoke hospital.

    I was diagnosed with PMP in Jan 2022 by my local hospital and was told I would be referred to Basingstoke, this was following abdominal pains on right side, local hospital went in to perform an appendectomy, but chose not to once they saw the extent of the PMP present.

    I had Cytoreduction surgery (CRS) and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) on 21 Feb 2022 by Mr Dayal of the Basingstoke team.

    CRS/HIPEC is major surgery, however it is the best chance if one has PMP for achieving NED (No Evidence of Disease).

    Delays in being referred to the specialists could allow any Mucinous growth to continue unchecked.

    The chance of having PMP is 3 in a million (latest indicators), hence GP’s are often ignorant to the condition as can be many local oncologists.

    I hope you read this before the next appointment.

  • We havent really been told anything, apart from he will be going to Good Hope hospital for heated chemotherapy. Still awaiting ct, mri results. Apparantly he had a drain put in place when he had his appendix out. ODP said there was an abscess where his appendix was.
