Hi husband has been diagnosed….but waiting on final pathology report to confirm throat cancer. I want to support him as much as possible. He has been told to expect to be off work for up to a year.. want him to feel comfortable at home. Any tips on what he will need? It’s an emotional rollercoaster he just went for an appointment on Wednesday and within five mins was on a ward getting scans biopsies bloods. He is still in hospital and treatment to start asquickly as possible. MDT team meeting Monday or Wed this week then a care plan will be in place.. Any advice on what I should say, do, and get to help him would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but sorry to hear about your husband.

A cancer diagnosis in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' cancer type and support challenges will help a lot (I have a totally different type of cancer)

The New to Community is like our reception desk where we look to direct you to the best part of the Community for you to get support. The Community is divided into dedicated Cancer Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you join and post in our dedicated Head and neck cancer support group. This is a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same support journey.

I see you have already joined and posted in our Carers only support group this is a safe place to connect with others navigating the exact same support challenges.

It is an emotional time supporting family so you might find this Macmillan information your feelings when someone has cancer helpful as well as this link getting help with your emotions.

You may find it helpful to call the Macmillan Support Line open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and support all the family.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.

  • Hi   I'm Dani and I hang out in the Head and Neck Cancer group. Pop over and join us. We have members who are carers as well as patients and you'll get a lot of tailored support there. It's a long journey but it's doable. I was 67 when I was diagnosed and I am now five years clear and about to be discharged from routine review.
