Hello, I am new here. A very close family member has recently had colon cancer. After being clear for a time post-treatment, scans show it has returned in distant organs. I am overwhelmed trying to understand what this means and how to support someone with such awful news. Thank you.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your family member's colon cancer has recently been discovered to have spread to other organs and I know what a worrying time this will be for you all.

I can see that you've already joined the bowel cancer forum which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences around your family member's diagnosis and treatment. Once you're ready to post there, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

Another forum which I think you'd find helpful to join is the family and friends forum which is a safe and supportive place to get support and to find out how others have supported a loved one living with cancer.

It would be really helpful if you could put something about your family member's diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
