Hair loss and anxiety

Hello.

I have lost my hair after 2nd round if EC. I am struggling with this so much. I have 2 wigs and feel very self conscious and anxious in both. I am frightened to leave the house.I went to a garden centre yesterday with my hubby and I ended up in bits because I felt like everyone could see it was a wig. I don't feel confident to go out with a head scarf either.

I'm just interested to see what other people's experience has been and how you have coped with this.

Thanks

Ellen

  • Hi, its never easy loosing you hair. We all take it differently. I wore a scarf because i didnt like the wigs that were given to me from the hospital i thought they looked horrible on me. I did have a friend who went and had a really nice one from a specialist shop but it was quite expensive. It was great for her to spend so much because her type of cancer was secondary so her hair would never come back due to the type of chemo she was on. Most of us only loose our hair for a short time and will make do with either scarf or NHS wig. There are some really nice scarves on the internet now much nicer than what i had to wear, they are specially designed for chemo patients. It seems to be a confidence thing with you though and only you can sort that problem. I looked at it as you know what i need to get out and about and lead my life as well as i can, and if people look or stare at me let them. They mean no harm they are just curious. My friend wore her scarf as a badge of honour as if to say look i will survive haha. Please keep brave and just get out there and enjoy those little trips because cancer treatment can take it out of you and we all need a day out to lift our spirits.I wish you all the best in your future treatment Dawn

  • Thank you. It is a confidence thing. I've got some things planned soon so I know I just need to bite the bullet and do it but I'm just finding it so hard. I'll get there hopefully. All the best x

  • A work colleague lost her hair (chemo) and wore a wig. Another colleague complimented her on how shiny her hair was and said "what do you put on it to make it look so nice?". So wigs can be flattering and people don't realise it's a wig. I hadn't, and I had been sitting opposite her for months!

My son has cancer and has lost his hair through chemo. He doesn't like the bald look but says he welcomes it as a sign chemo is working.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I lost my hair after round two of EC and found that there were lots of stylish and affordable headwear from www.annabandana.co.uk. I bought a selection and wore those for everyday and a wig if I was going out for say a meal and wanted to look more 'normal'.

The online community is divided up into different support forums where you can ask questions, share experiences and get support. As you haven't said what sort of cancer you're being treated for I can't give you a link to the appropriate one, so you could either drop me a line telling me and I'll give you a direct link, or you could look through this list.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Thank you. I have updated my profile and found the breast cancer forum and posted there.
