Oesophagus cancer

Hi, I'm new to this group and my Mum has oesophagus cancer.

She has had trouble eating for about a month and was being sick soon after eating.

Her doctor diagnosed hiatus hernia and she had an endoscopy, this is when the cancer was discovered.

Mum had an oesophagal stent fitted and is now managing to keep soup and liquid down. Which is good, although she is still weak.

Mum is 88 and obviously not a candidate for chemo, radio or surgery. The Drs are looking at getting her more physically able to go home, but we are having to push hard for updates/ progress on the cancer and how this will pan out once she is home.

My family will naturally do what we can, but what does the future hold? We are struggling to understand how this will affect her quality of life and how we can help in terms of care.

Sorry to sound pitying,  Mum doesn't seem to accept she has this cancer; when it's brought up, she gets so upset.

Thank you for letting me say this... xxx

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your mum has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and I know what a difficult time this will be for the whole family.

The online community is divided into different support forums so I'm going to recommend that you join the oesophageal cancer forum, as you'll then connect directly with others who have this type of cancer, and also either the carers only forum, if you are your mum's carer, or the family and friends forum if you're not her carer. These last two groups are good places to be able to discuss your worries and emotions with others who have a loved one living with cancer.

To join, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your mum's diagnosis into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any problems negotiating the community just reply to me and I'll be pleased to help.
