Hi, I,m new to the community. My dad has terminal oesopahagal cancer, and is living on his own. I'm trying my best to support him as he has also suffered a bereavment, his wife died before Christmas. The last few weeks, I seem to have been overwhelmed with paperwork, and everything that comes with supporting dad and his illness. I feel so sad for dad, he lives a distance from us, but understandably wants to stay in his own home. I have set up a rota for family visiting at the weekend, and although I have 2 siblings, it feels like most, if not all of the practical/emotional support is coming from me.
I was wondering how others may be coping in a similar situation?
Love and Best Wishes to all...
Hi hibiscus and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I'm sorry to read that your dad has been diagnosed with incurable oesophageal cancer and I know what a difficult time this will be for the whole family.
The online community is divided into different support forums so I'm going to recommend that you join the supporting someone with incurable cancer forum as you'll then connect directly with other carers, friends and families of people with an incurable diagnosis. You can discuss your emotions as well as practical issues about palliative care and end of life.
To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could put something about your dad's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
If you have any problems negotiating the community just reply to me and I'll be pleased to help.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
