I had testicular cancer last year and had the operation to remove it, i was clear for a few months but then it was found in a lymph node (apparently quite common). We have kept this from our children (young adults) who were off to uni and one of them has lots of anxiety issues and has caused them to already miss over a year of uni.
The treatment is over and my next scan is at the end of the month, we have sort of decided that we need to tell them when they come home for christmas but i am struggling to think of how they will cope with the news, we really want them to get on with what they have chosen to do and im scared it might make them want to stay home.
Hi Mind the gap and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll both find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I'm sorry to read that you've recently discovered that your testicular cancer has returned and it's natural to worry how to tell your children.
The online community is divided into different support forums so I'm going to recommend that you join the testicular cancer forum as this will give you the chance to talk to others who have been in a similar situation.
To join just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
You might also find this information from Macmillan on talking to children and teenagers helpful and you can always phone the Support Line on 0808 808 0000 if you want to talk this through with them before talking to your children.
It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
If you have any problems negotiating the community just reply to me and I'll be pleased to help if I can.
Morning Latchbrook thank you for the warm welcome, i will have a look at the links
