Hi everyone
my my dad (63 yr old) has recently been diagnosed with tongue cancer, this is the first time I have had to deal with cancer in someone I am close to so it’s all new and scary! Would love to hear from people who have experience with this type of cancer and how to best help and support my dad
thank you
Hi BAO and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I'm sorry to read that your dad has recently been diagnosed with tongue cancer but it's great that you want to find out about this type of cancer and how best to support him.
I can see that you've already found and joined the head and neck cancer and family and friends forums. The former is a great place to ask questions and share experiences around your dad's cancer and it's treatment, while the latter is a supportive place to discuss your worries and emotions as well as find out how others, who have a loved one living with cancer, support them.
When you feel ready you can start new posts in those forums in the same way as you did here and also join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could put something about your dad's diagnosis and any proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
I had tongue and lymph nodes cancer got told this in October 2024 they put on 2 lots of very strong chemotherapy as i was only 54 1st round of chemo was too strong and put me in hospital for 4 days but 2nd round they reduced chemo to 80% and that was better for me ,so just in case it happens to your dad he can lower the strength of chemo ..in the end I had 3 lots of chemotherapy and 35 sessions of radiotherapy which is really tough in the last couple of weeks as I couldn't eat and still struggling 6mths after treatment but good news is ive been given the all clear now be on my 4th check up in January. It's the hardest treatment to have but its the easiest cancer to beat so please dont worry to much your dad will get though this and be cancer free and like me be checked for 5 years every 2mths check up wishing you and your dad all the love in the world and your dad will 100% ok
good news is ive been given the all clear now
