Hi All,
32yrs old, had stem cell transplant in 2018 and i have been in remission for 5 years now. I am now looking to get life insurance/critical illness as i want to get a house. So far i have been turned down by 5 companies.
Has any body been in the same position as me ?
Thanks
Hi AJC91 and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but sorry to hear about the challenges you are having with getting insurance/critical illness post Stem Cell Transplant. (SCT)
I have had 2 Allo (donour) SCTs the first was in June 2014 with the second in Oct 2015.
I was turning 60 when I had my second SCT so I was pushing on age wise but did have a look at what cover was out there and apart from these over 50s plans that are not that great that was it.
Even when I was first diagnosed with my rare incurable NHL when I was in my mid 40s I could not get any cover, fortunately I had an insurance that was in place that was running the term of my mortgage but once that ran out I could not get anything new.
Over the years helping on the Community I have talked with folks from various blood cancers and SCT and they all say the same about the difficulties in getting cover........ having had SCT is also seen as a High Risk when it comes to insurance providers.
You may want to join our dedicated Stem cell transplant support group and put up your question and see if anyone has had any success.
We also have our Ask an Expert section where you can ask your question to our Macmillan Advisers but do allow a few working days for a reply.
Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community but in the meantime all the very best.
Hi Mike
Thanks for getting back to me. Sorry to hear about you medical history.
Its just a shame, how insurance companies penalise you even if you have been a remission for so many years!
I have put a post on the Anthony Nolan stem cell forum site and still waiting for a response
Thank you for the advice
Unfortunately this is Insurance Companies in general…… everyone is assessed based on their Risk Assessment standards…… it’s the same with most Travel Insurance policies…… it honestly took me ti be a good 5 years in remission to get an affordable price that was not silly.
Have you tried going through an independent insurance broker as they understand the insurance business better than most.
