Good morning.
I was suggested this forum when I called Macmillan for advice.
My Dad has incurable high grade lymphoma and between 3 and 12 months.
This all happened just four months ago. Before that he was doing well especially at 93. He's not a normal 93 year old. My parents were born marathon runners which they took up in their 50s and they kept strength and fitness from this. My Dad was still doing a lot very recently. So it's been a big change and shock to us all.
It originally presented as a big growth at the front of hus mouth which has reduced with treatment. He's okay but the nodes in his neck are now bigger. Luckily they can try some chemo in the form of tablets to try and keep these at bay. But if that doesn't work then it may not be long. If he gets an infection it may not be long. He's put on weight and he's a strong man but we just don't know how this will go.
Thank you
Rachel
Hi Rachel Rach88 and warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community although so sorry to hear about your dad's Lymphoma diagnosis and prognosis.
I am Mike and I help out around our Lymphoma groups. I was diagnosed way back in 1999 at 43 with a rare, incurable but treatable type of Low Grade Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma eventually reaching Stage 4a in late 2013 so although my Lymphoma ‘type’ may be different I do appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well.
We do have our General Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma Support Group........ but at the moment I am not aware of any group members who are supporting a family member on the same treatment pathway as your dad is on...... but do have a look through the group.
The challenge with High Grade NHL is it grows very fast and has to be treated aggressively and this in normally some very strong IV chemotherapy but with your dad being 93 his body most likely could not deal with this type of aggressive treatment.
You may benefit from joining our general Carers only and Supporting someone with incurable cancer support groups where you will connect with others navigating the same support challenges.
Our Support Line teams are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00 where you will find one of team there to help you out. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.
Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community or just want to chat.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
