I am a 90 year old retired 'professional' living in East Renfrewshire. Earlier this year I was diagnosed with a tongue cancer and have recovered from tongue surgery. Before the tongue cancer, my sense of smell had deteriorated somewhat, but after the surgery it has become nil with the result that although I can still detect the five basic tastes (sweet, sour, bitter, salt and umami) I can no longer enjoy the flavors of food and drinks because enjoying flavors depends on a sense of smell. This is quite a loss !!
I am wondering if there are any others in my locality in a similar situation ?
Hi gimproviser and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
That's great to read that you've recovered from tongue cancer but not so good that you've lost your sense of smell.
The online community is divided up into different support groups so the best way to connect with others who may be experiencing the same as you is to join the head and neck cancer group which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support.
To do this just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
