Hey I've got breast cancer and I'm having a mastectomy next month. Just wanna chat with people going through the same

  • Don't worry to much. you'll get though it.its a big shock at first but  try to keep positive xx

  • Thanks I'm just scared I've never had an op before

  • when i had my opp i was so scared i had to have some pills from my doctor to calm me down , so i know how you feel, once you get to hospital you will be able to cope its the waiting that gets to you i think. it did for me . but all went fine .

  • After the opp did u have a bottle drain thing?

  • yes but it may be different now. its been a few years since my opp and i had nodes removed too. i was allowed home after three days but still had a drain, nurses came everyday , they were great and answered any questions ,

  • I'm having my nodes removed also my consultant told me it will be a 2 hour opp and that I get to go home the next day with a drain. How are you now? And did u just have it off and left it or did u have the replacement straight away in the same opp

  • that's great you'll be able to go home next day. touchwood I'm ok. but i didn't get offered a replacement for quiet a while ,mine was quite bad and the surgeon just wanted to get the opp done then i had chemo ,rads. then 14 months of Herceptin ,i didn't bother to get a replacement, id had enough by then .lol    if i had, had the choice i would have had a replacement at the same time,

  • They said I might have to have rads. And yeah touch wood I get to come home the next day lol I'm not having a replacement straight away later on I might thou

  • Hi   and welcome to the Macmillan Community but I am so sorry to hear about your diagnoses.

The cancer journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' cancer type can help a lot.

You already see that the Community is actually divided into dedicated Cancer Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) and you have joined and put up a reply to one post in our dedicated Breast cancer support group. This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

Why not connect with the group by putting up your very own post, just click on this link Breast cancer then once the group page opens you can introduce yourself by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title.

It’s a challenging time for you so you may want to use the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
