Hi this is my first post. I went to the doctors with a lump in my breast 2 weeks ago. She told me it was cancer even without a diagnosis. I have my first hospital appointment on Friday and am obviously really worried about the outcome. Does anyone know what sort of tests I will have and how long it takes for the results to come in. The hospital letter said I could be in there for 3 hours.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community but I am sorry to hear about your concerns about your upcoming hospital appointment. Navigating the diagnosis journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from others who have been on the ‘exact same' pathway can help a lot.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you consider joining and posting in our dedicated Breast cancer support group. This group is a safe place to talk to others who have been through the BC diagnosis process, about their treatment experiences, to ask questions and get support.

To join a group first click on the “Bold Link” I have created above then once the group page opens click on “Click to Join” when the black banner appears or “Join” under “Group Tools” (this all depends on the device you are using)

You can then put up your own post when you’re ready by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title. You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post. You can also scroll through other members posts and click “Reply” to get involved.

It’s a challenging time for you so you may want to use the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 or via Webchat and Email too. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

  • Hi  and a second welcome to the online community

I was recalled after having a routine mammogram and my first appointment lasted quite a long time.

Firstly I sat down with one of the breast cancer nurses and she talked to me about why I was there and what would be happening. This also gave me a chance to ask any questions.

I then had a mammogram on a machine which I think was a more powerful one than the normal mammogram machines are as, beside the area of DCIS I'd been recalled for, it also picked up a tiny lump that the original mammogram hadn't seen.

Next I went into a room and was physically examined. I felt relieved that the lump couldn't be felt but, unfortunately, when the consultant used the ultrasound on my breast it showed up the lump. She said that she was pretty sure it would be cancerous so I then went off to have  a biopsy of the lump done.

At each stage I had to sit back in reception and wait for the next piece of equipment to be free, so although I can't remember how long I was there it was quite a while. I'd recommend you take a book or something to do in between the various stages.

The results of the biopsy were back a week later, in time for my first meeting with the breast surgeon.

    I hope this helps
