Hi, I get my biopsy results tomorrow. The person who did the biopsy, under ultrasound, hinted heavily that I might have DCIS - I got recalled because calcifications were spotted on a routine mammogram. Can anyone give me an idea about what kind of information I’ll be given tomorrow, if it is DCIS? Will I have to make decisions straight away about surgery? The whole thing has been such a shock.
Hi Cherie6 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I was recalled after my routine mammogram last year and was told while at the breast clinic that it definitely looked like cancer.
At my first appointment with the consultant, she confirmed what I'd already been told and then explained what the treatment plan was. In my case a lumpectomy rather than a mastectomy was recommended as the area was so small the consultant was confident that she'd be able to remove it all, including a couple of sentinel lymph nodes, with the breast conserving surgery.
If you do have to have treatment you'll probably be given lots of information in leaflet form as well as being told all about the proposed treatment. I was happy to have a lumpectomy so the consultant booked me in then and there but I'm sure I could have had time to think about it if I'd wanted to.
I can see that you've already found and joined the breast cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support. When you feel ready to post there you can click on the link above and then start a new post in the same way as you did here. You can also join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
Hi Latchbrook, thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. I’m not even sure I should be on Macmillan at all as even if I get a DCIS diagnosis tomorrow, it isn’t actually cancer is it? It’s pre cancer (?!). All extremely confusing, just to add to the mix of whatever’s whirling round my head right now.
Thank you for your support, I’m sure all will be explained tomorrow. One step at a time.
Hi Cherie
You're more than welcome here and you'll find lots of people with DCIS in the breast cancer group.
This information from Macmillan explains what DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) is.
All the best for tomorrow
