Getting a diagnosis

I have a private GP because I have struggled to get help and support from the NHS GPs

He thinks I may have Multiple Myeloma and has encouraged me to get tested. The private GP’s are unwilling to refer me for testing.

in addition I have a mass on my thyroid.

This has been going on for more than a year.

I am getting recurrent and repeated infection including pyelonephritis which was confirmed in February 2022 by a previous NHS GP.

My private GP is now 200 miles from my new home.

I cannot afford any more private tests and/or prescriptions  I am T2 diabetic aged 70, so should get free prescriptions  my HbA1c went up to double a reasonable range 81mmol.  My cholesterol is also high

I was referred to endocrinology as ‘urgent’ in April, but have still not received an appointment. I did receive a letter saying they were very busy - also in April. The ENT doctor I saw in April told me that they would need to do an ultrasound and biopsy to confirm my thyroid mass, but that they wouldn’t go any further until I got my blood sugars under better control. The NHS GP has given me NO support to do this, and at my recent NHS GP  appointment following the latest HbA1c, said ‘we won’t change your medication as you are due to see an endocrinologist’

I feel trapped in a circle of failures by the NHS surgery. I travelled 400 miles this week to speak and meet with my private GP who confirms the mass in my thyroid is still present, and I now also have a goitre. He confirmed that I still have a urine infection - although local NHS GP said my urine test was negative 4 weeks ago  he has prescribed antibiotics in an attempt to treat the infection

He read me the letter he sent to the NHS GP two days ago pleading with them to see me and refer me. I have still heard nothing.

I feel so unwell today that I have considered calling an ambulance. This is the third day I have felt so I’ll following a busy day the day before

I just don’t know what to do next.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community but I am sorry to hear about the challenges you are having navigating the system to get a clear diagnoses.

I fortunately have had a very good experience navigating the system so I have no experience to bring to the table.

This service provides cancer information, practical information or just a listening ear.
