Hi all,

I started Chemo treatment 6 weeks ago, and I am about to move to another location (From North to South Uk).

Will I be able to get a direct transfer without affecting my treatment?

Is it better to speak to my GP, Cancer care team or Oncologist about it?

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community.

Moving between Health Boards can have its problems as there is often challenges in getting a good handover between GPs and more importantly with your cancer care trans.

You do need to speak with everyone GP, cancer care team and Oncologist to keep them in the loop but this happens all the time so I am sure that they will keep you right.

But you will have to start with the end in mind so you will need to be accepted into a new GP practice where you are going to stay in the South, you will need to have an idea what hospital you would be treated at but your existing cancer care team and Oncologist may well be able to help you out with this and get them to explain how your medical records are transferred and how your treatment can be also be continued without you falling through the gaps in the NHS.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) but you don’t say what type of cancer you have but if you care to have a look through THIS LIST you will find all our many dedicated cancer support groups listed.

These groups are safe places to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from members who are navigating the same journey……. and you may also connect with someone who has actually moved Health Boards.

Have a look through the list I have given you above and once you find the group for your cancer type you can join the group by selecting “Click to Join” when the black banner appears or “Join” under “Group Tools” (this all depends on the device you are using)

You can then put up your own post when you’re ready by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title. You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post. You can also scroll through other members posts and click “Reply” to get involved.

It’s a challenging time for you so you may want to use the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 or via Webchat and Email too. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
