How do I manage money worries. Single mum and normally work fulltime. Been off work for nearly a year with cancer
Hi Henri and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your diagnosis and your ongoing money worries.
Could I suggest you call the Macmillan Support Line open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00.
This service provides practical information, emotional support and most importantly you can connect with our benefits and financial guidance team who are the experts in this area.
The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) but you don’t say what type of cancer you have but if you care to have a look through THIS LIST you will find all our many dedicated cancer support groups listed.
These groups are safe places to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from members who are navigating the same journey.
Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.
Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
Hi
Ive just joined this evening and should be sleeping! I too feel and echo the financial worries: I have children, I am the bread winner and want to take the time off work to heal but equally find I am letting my family down. Although my work are being supportive I am feel I am the cynical one worried I won’t have a job to come back even the the sick package is super- duper generous: also covering leave as a rolling year.
I am so confused wondering if I should take leave, I want to but my family’s perception is I should keep busy because important I work to keep me happy? I know/ my family know the decision is mine. However, if chemo fails, I will like have a mastectomy and it will be at that point where I am more likely to require that sick leave to recover. Thoughts?

Hi The Climb and I see it’s your first post so welcome to the Community.
I have been in my incurable cancer journey for over 24 years now so do appreciate the challenges of balancing work and treatment and the effects this has on the finances. Making sure you ‘do’ the right thing for you to heal, to support your family and to be honest with your employer is a balance so do consider calling our team on out help line (info above)
I am assuming that you have Breast Cancer (do correct me if I am wrong) so you may want to consider joining and posting in our dedicated Breast cancer support group. This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.
Always around to help out or chat.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
