Hello, I am 62 & I was diagnosed with uterine cancer Grade 3 Stage 3a November 2022. I had a radical hysterectomy mid January, have just completed 6 cycles of chemo & starting 25 sessions of radiotherapy to include 2 brachytherapy beg of July. I am a UK citizen but live in Portugal, where my treatment has been amazing, no worries there, however, I haven’t until now felt the need for the support & connection of people (women) going through something similar. Reaching out & hoping that I can find a group to suit. Thank you x

  • Good Morning Thumbelina

I am sorry to see that you have had a diagnosis of uterine cancer. Well done for completing your chemo. I was glad when mine was done.  I hope that your radiotherapy goes well.

There is a forum on here that I think maybe of help to you so will pop a link below.

Womb (uterus) cancer forum - Macmillan Online Community

There is also a group that is for people that are having radiotherapy. I also used this group when going through my radiotherapy that finished in September 2022. I found it helpful to connect with others having the same experiences.

I hope this helps a bit but if you need anything else please do ask. We also have a support line (number at the bottom of this) which is there if you need it.

  • Hi Thumbelina, I am 68 and also diagnosed with uterine cancer earlier this year.  I had the radical hysterectomy in May so am just recovering. I start the 6 cycles of chemo on 6th July so would be interested to hear of your experience.  I will also have to have radiotherapy at some point.  Sorry I can't give any advice as I am still at the early stages of the process but more than happy to share thoughts and support.  We are having some glorious weather at the moment but am quite envious of your living in Portugal!  xx

  • Thank you - found the groups.

  • Hello, I hope that you are improving after your surgery. My surgery seems ages ago now & I recovered from it fairly quickly & actually felt much better than I had previously. To be honest, I think I rode the chemo journey quite well. I bought myself a selection of chemo beanies from Amazon as I’d decided not to do a wig, I didn’t want the hair loss to be an issue & kept reminding myself that it’s only temporary. Though I have found my confidence dipping the past couple of weeks. My experience of the chemo (mine was 3 week cycles x 6) was that the 1st 3 days after treatment  were buoyed up by the oral steroids I took, then after that there were maybe 4 days of fatigue. I slept whenever I wanted & listened to my body. We have a dog so we walked a lot & the exercise was good both physically & mentally. The oncologist was surprised that I didn’t have any delays to any of my treatments due to blood test results i.e. not recovering sufficiently to have the subsequent treatment. I ate well, rested well & exercised well, maybe I was just lucky. I was offered a reduction in dose of the chemo drugs on cycle 5 because I developed some neuropathy in my feet but I asked to stay on the full dose as I didn’t want to regret it at a later date.

Good luck & although it’s tough, we are tougher. xx

  • Hi, thanks for your advice.  I've got an appointment next week for a wig consultation but not sure if I will wear it!  I've been looking at the beanie options on Amazon so will be ordering a couple.  As you say, the issue of hair loss has to be kept in proportion in the grand scheme of things.  Your experience gives me hope that chemo won't be quite as bad as I'm expecting (I am on the same regime as you describe) and have told our labrador to stand by for extra walks.  I have found this forum really helpful and to know that there are other people out there going through the same journey.

    Good luck.  xx
