Hi all. I have come here because this cancer business is very new to me...it is something that happens to other people's families...not mine... (or so I naively believed)

Now my mum has a melanoma that has spread to her brain. She has had 2 doses of immunotherapy that made her very ill. We thought she would die the second time but she recovered, the warrior she is.

I could go on and on about the emotional rollercoaster my family has been on since November. But I suspect you all know. We have found a lovely nursing home for her and thought that this would make things easier but she is desperately home sick and we are scared she will leave and go home. My dad is not capable of looking after her. Her house, while beautiful, is not set up for someone unwell.

Does anyone have any experience/ advice regarding whether someone stays in care or goes home? At the moment she is able to walk, shower herself, eta etc but we are concerned that this may change quickly as she is about to have some radiotherapy and the doctor previously gave her 8 weeks to live but has changed thqat estimation to 16 weeks.

Thanks for reading!

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your mum has been diagnosed with melanoma which has spread to her brain and that she had a bad reaction to immunotherapy.

The online community is divided up into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the melanoma group, which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences around treatment of melanoma. You will find plenty of people there who are on, or have been on, immunotherapy.

Another group which I think you'd benefit from joining is the family and friends group, which is  a safe and supportive place to discuss your worries and emotions and to ask others what they have done about living arrangements in similar circumstances.

To join these groups, just click on the links I've created which will take you straight there. Once you've joined you can start a new post in the same way as you did here, and join in with existing threads by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
