Hi I’m wondering if anyone can give me some advice.
I had a CT scan in Dec 2022 and was diagnosed with a lung nodule being 8mm.
I had a follow up scan in April 2023 and this nodule as grown to 16mm. I have been advised that I have a appointment with the respiratory team in Aug 2023.

however I’m very anxious and decided to contact the British lung foundation and they said giving the circumstances I should be offered a 14 day appointment.

I have contacted my GP and explained my concern that this nodule may grow more by the time my appointment in Aug 23 comes around.

My GP as requested a 14 day appointment and I am just wondering what to expect going forward.

Many thanks in advance.

  • Hi   and welcome to the Online Community but I am sorry to hear about your ongoing lung investigations.

Navigating the diagnosis world can be such a stressful and challenging time.

Well done persevering and getting your GP to request a 2 week appointment…. and lets hope this can be achieved in time but at the moment most departments are not able to achieve this within that timeframe.

As for what next?….. I can only relate to my long experience living and being treated for an incurable blood cancer.

In 2013…. 13 years into my journey a regular CT scan picked up an area on my lung that was suspicious so was referred to Respiratory. It just so happened that the consultant is a very good friend.

After reviewing the CT he decided on a CT guided lung biopsy, I have to say that this was a challenging process due to my other health conditions….. but the biopsy was done and the results came back as Pleural Thickening and Pleural Plaque (Right Lung) - Asbestosis. But this result was ok, I did not have Malignant Mesothelioma but would have yearly checks and after a lung function test I was told my lung function was 15-20% lower than it should be.

In all these years the area has not changed significantly so no treatment has been required and as I am now 67 they think that I will die with it not because of it.

Following my last treatment for my rare blood cancer in 2015 a new node appeared on my lung but during the intervening time before a new biopsy was arranged the node had reduced and it was agreed the biopsy was not necessary and this area has not changed in all these years.

You can see that things are not straightforward when it comes to getting a diagnosis but let’s hope that you get your appointment soon and they can find out what this is….. but not everything is cancer.

  • Hi Thank you Mike ( The highlander )

    Thank you for your advice.

So I’d like to tell you where I’m at at the moment following my 14 day appointment.

I attended my appointment with a specialist nurse and she was very good. She showed me my CT scan and explained the nodule in question was a GGO.

They are going to have a meeting with ell the team to discuss the options.

To be honest I still have anxiety.

  • Your anxiety is understandable.

At the very least you will be monitored from now on.  GGOs can be caused by things other than cancer and even if they are cancer they are often slow growing.  Given that yours has doubled in size, they may want to do a couple more tests to get more specific information, but the important thing is that the right people are now looking at it and weighing the options.

  • Hi again  and thanks for the update. Ground-glass opacity can develop in different ways and like  says not always cancer but your case will most likely be discussed at the hospital multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting, this is where the heads of various disciplines review cases and agree in the best way forward.

It is a stressful time but let’s look for clear answers soon ((hugs))
