Radiotherapy - why do I feel rubbish

I should be sailing through radiotherapy so why aren't I? Others I've spoken to say it's OK and yes they felt tired but for goodness sake I've only got 5 sessions but feel so tired, sick and generally poorly.  Scars are sore and tender but I'm using the moisturiser they recommended.

I was diagnosed Nov 22 with DCIS (but it wasn't), operation Jan 23 and results showed invasive cells so further operation Feb 23 which fortunately removed the cells and there was no cancer in lymph nodes that were removed.  Hurrah! Yes I was so lucky and for that I'm truly grateful.  I sailed through all that and thought radiotherapy was going to be easy. My support group buddies all said the travelling to/from appts was worse than the treatment which is a few minutes.  I get panicky having to hold my breath (left side so need to protect other organs) - I could do it no problem in practise sessions but as soon as they say hold your breath I go into panic mode and only seem to be able to hold few seconds.

There are so many people in this group with far worse to worry about so why am I being a wimp.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that you're struggling with radiotherapy and just because others haven't doesn't mean you're a wimp.

The online community is divided up into different support groups, so I'm going to recommend that you join the breast cancer group so you can connect directly with others to ask questions, share experiences and give and receive support

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here, and join in with existing conversations by clicking on reply.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi lovely,

I've been in a similar situation to you with my diagnosis being only the week before your's. I finished radiotherapy 5 weeks ago & still feel the remnants of the side effects. Please don't ever think yourself a wimp as we're all different & are affected in different ways with treatments. I "only" had a lumpectomy but everything that could go wrong, went wrong with bells on!

I would speak with the breast specialist for radiotherapy - you should have been given a contact number? It's possible that you're suffering with anxiety (which wouldn't be unusual at all) & they can do different things with the machine so that you don't have to hold your breath which helps a lot.

I hope it helps to hear this & things get easier for you xx

  • Thank you.  Yes may be anxiety which isn't like me usually wear my big girl pants for everything but you're in that room on your own trying to stay still and listen for when can let go of breath and it seems ages. Thanks for supportive words. X
