Hi there, I was diagnosed with gastronesophageal cancer the end of last June - I’d had an endoscopy for what I thought was a possible ulcer. In fact I was contemplating whether i really needed the exam but for the difficulty of swallowing which had started just a few weeks beforehand. I and the examiner were shocked I had cancer as I looked and was so healthy.
Fast forward 12 months, many tests, procedures, scans, X-rays, chemotherapy and major operation end of January I was told yesterday I have incurable cancer. That said, my scans are clear at the moment.
i feel out on a limb as i am British but live in Portugal and they have no support groups of similarly diagnosed people. My partner and family and friends have been so supportive but they are not me going through this. I’ve chosen not to share the incurable disgnosis with anyone apart from my partner for now.
I am 60 years old, have two grown up children from my previous marriage. I’m a very positive person and haven’t given up on myself at all but I just don’t know how I feel today. I think i just feel a bit lost today.
Hi Monicamadwoman and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I'm sorry to read that after lengthy treatment you have recently been told that your gastroesophageal cancer is incurable.
The online community is divided up into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the oesophageal cancer group, which is a great place to connect with others who have the same type of cancer as you, and also the living with incurable cancer group, which is a safe and supportive place to discuss anything you like, including your emotions around your diagnosis.
To join either or both of these groups, just click on the links I've created which will take you straight there. Once you've joined the groups you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing threads by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
