Hi, New Here!
My Mum has recently been diagnosed with T4 cancer. i am not coping very well and finding it really hard to speak to people.
I want to be there for my mum and want to be strong for her and don't want to show her how hard this is but i am finding it really challenging. Mum is well and is still very able despite having T4, she is putting weight on and doesn't show any of the usual signs as her cancer was found by accident. We are currently in the stage of deciding which treatment to go for as we are not sure what her body will be able to cope with. Its hard to wrap my head around making someone who day to day feels well suddenly become very sick with treatment. I don't want to worry her with how hard this is and want to stay hopeful for her but its really hard!
Does anyone have any advise on how to cope? Or if anyone has been through something similar? Or even have the perspective of having cancer and how you would want to be treated etc?
Thank you in Advance for any support or advice.
x
Hi hope happiness and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis. A cancer diagnosis like this in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' cancer type and support challenges can help a lot.
The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) but you don’t say what type of cancer your mum has but if you care to have a look through THIS LIST you will find all our many dedicated cancer support groups listed.
These groups are safe places to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same journey.
Have a look through the list above and once you find the group for your mum's cancer type you can join the group by selecting “Click to Join” when the black banner appears or “Join” under “Group Tools” (this all depends on the device you are using)
You can then put up your own post when you’re ready by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title. You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post. You can also scroll through other members posts and click “Reply” to get involved.
When it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting family and friends you may also benefit from joining our Carers only support group where you will connect with others navigating the same support challenges.
Our Support Line teams are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00, email or live webchat where you will find one of team there to help you out. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.
Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.
Do get back to me if you need further help.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
