I am caring for my daughter, who is in her 20's, as she was diagnosed with a large kidney tumour in November, had surgery to remove it at Christmas, and the histology in January showed it was a rare Wilm's tumour. Our local trust had no experience of this type of cancer, so we had to wait for another trust to take on her treatment, and before she had a chance to start chemotherapy, it had spread to her liver, both lungs and many lymph nodes. She has now had some chemotherapy which seems to be shrinking the tumours. She is about to start radiotherapy which will be a 160 mile daily commute. I wondered if anyone else had a long commute to treatment and how they coped. We are a bit worried about the radiotherapy too and the side effects. Also it would be great to hear from someone affected by adult Wilm's tumour.
Hi Book lover and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your daughters diagnosis.
A cancer diagnosis like this in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' cancer type and support challenges can help a lot.
The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you consider joining our supportive Kidney cancer support group. This is a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same journey.
When it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting family and friends you may also benefit from posting in our Carers only support group (I see you have already joined) where you will connect with others navigating the same support challenges.
To join a group first click on the “Bold Links” I have created above then once the group page opens click on “Click to Join” when the black banner appears or “Join” under “Group Tools” (this all depends on the device you are using)
You can then put up your own post when you’re ready by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title. You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post. You can also scroll through other members posts and click “Reply” to get involved.
Our Support Line teams are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00, email or live webchat where you will find one of team there to help you out. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.
Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.
Do get back to me if you need further help.
Hi again, if you put Wilm's tumour into the search tool near the top and select ‘Anywhere’ this will bring up older posts about Wilm's tumour and as always you can hit reply and see if the members are still using the site.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
