Hi and I need to start somewhere!

2023 has been a whirlwind of bad news and challenges. I’m only just starting to think about what this all means. At New Year I was diagnosed with breast cancer which had already spread to my bones. My femur fractured requiring surgery and a rod and a tumour in my spine had cracked a vertebrae putting pressure on my spinal column. Surgery has stabilised this for now.  Most of Jan and Feb was spent in hospital getting this sorted before any cancer treatment could start. I’ve had radiotherapy and am having chemo. To add to this they discovered small tumours in my brain which I am about to have treatment for.  Could it get any worse, well Covid struck this week and although I’ve not been too unwell it has delayed all my next lot of treatment!

A lot of time on my own in isolation has been the first time I’ve really had to stop and think. I know this cancer is terminal but have no idea of what my prognosis is and don’t know if I want to know. I work on the basis that while the medical team are willing to carry out the type of surgeries I’ve had and willing to do the treatments then they must think its worth it!  It’s hard to talk to my partner and I don’t really know where to start with my three grown up children.  This week is the first time I’ve cried and feel lost.

Where do I go from here?

thanks for listening

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

It certainly sounds like this year has been a challenging one and I'm sorry to read how much you've gone through.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups I'm going to recommend a couple for you to join. The first is the secondary breast cancer group, where you can ask questions and share experiences about this type of cancer and it's treatment, and the second is the living with incurable cancer group, which is a safe space for people with an incurable diagnosis to give and receive support.

To join these groups just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here, and join in with existing conversations by clicking on reply.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

    ((hugs))
