Hi,

Pretty new here. Bit anxious and it might be a long story

Last week my mother had a blood test done by her gp (routine for diabetes)

Results came back and we received a message that she had high pottasium so had to go A&E asap. After a ECG test and more blood tests they found an abnormality in her blood work and was referred to hematology appointment in a Macmillan cancer centre (tomorrow)

Que the anxiousness.

Any advice will help

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your mum. It is indeed a concerning time.

I have lived with and been treated for a very rare type of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma for over 23 years and never once has a blood test that pointed to my type of blood cancer.

There are many different types of blood conditions that a Haematologists looks after…… not all are blood cancers.

My advise is that someone goes with your mum to her appointment as two heads are better than one and see what the Haematologist has to say….. from talking with many people over the years and also from my first hand experience I do expect that she will have to have further tests to help pint point what this actually is.

Do cone back once you have further information.

Many thanks for getting back to me much appreciated.

I'll be going along with her to the appointment

  • That is good to hear. The world of blood is very complicated and yes there are a number of different types of blood cancers with Lymphoma (just one of the cancer types) being the 5th most common cancer in the UK after Breast, Lung, Colon and Prostate cancers.

But as I said there are many none cancer blood conditions and I often sit in a Haematology waiting room and only half the folks in the room had a blood cancer. So at this point it all an unknown but let’s look for answers quickly.

    Always around to chat.
