Mum has ovarian cancer

Hi everyone,

My mum was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer just over a year ago. Things were going ok until a few months ago when the drug she was taking didn't work. A few more rounds of chemo followed but it seems the cancer is resistant to this.

She's currently in hospital as the cancer is pressing on her small bowel and blocking it. The doctors are optimistic they can unblock it, but there's no guarantee. She's been eating yoghurts and ice cream while being given certain medications, but nothing has changed in the last few days and her stomach has really expanded.

The whole experience has been a massive reality check for me. I've joined other forums but decided to join this one too so I can talk to other people who are going through the same things as I am.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your mum is currently in hospital and I know what a difficult time this will be for you.

The online community is divided up into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the ovarian cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences around treatment. I think you'd also benefit from joining either the carers only group, if you are your mum's carer, or the family and friends group, if you're not her carer. Both of these last two groups are safe and supportive places to discuss your worries and emotions with other people who are looking after a loved one living with cancer.

To join any of these groups, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here, and join in with existing conversations by clicking on reply.

It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
