Refusal of radiotherapy

My lovely partner of 51 has refused anymore radiotherapy after watching several friends really suffering during treatment and losing many over the past 3 years.  He has lung cancer with a third of the lungs a mass and is receiving benefits and end of life payments despite having been a very active physical worker prior to being struck by covid 3 years ago when he was in intensive care for 6 weeks.  It was from these scans the cancer was discovered.

He currently says the gym is his therapy and works out daily to expand the lungs and keep physically fit.  Some days are good, some days he can barely get out of bed - the good are far more often than the bad at the moment thankfully and it is these days that we look forward to. However planning anything is nearly impossible we just go with the flow.

Is there anyone else going through something similar?  He takes all the tablets and is also diabetic so we have to keep a close eye on that.  I just want advice on how best to support him.  I understand it may well be a battle of 3 months or 12 and am trying to get as fully prepared for the worst times to come.

Simply knowing I can come on here and share my thoughts is great.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups, I'm going to recommend that you join the lung cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences around treatment, and also the supporting someone with incurable cancer group, where you can talk to others who are in a similar position to yourself.

To join, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here, and join in with existing conversations by clicking on reply.

It would be great if you could pop something about your husband's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
