Waiting for it to hit me????

Hi, everyone keeps telling me that it will hit me in a few days? I’ve had my surgery. I’ve had emotional low points, I’ve thought about it since Mother’s Day to be honest when the doctor found my lump. Exactly what is going to happen? I am taking each day as it comes- will I wake up one day and totally lose it? Every time I wake up I think is this the day that  it will hit me? What does that even mean? I’m very much a get on with it kind of person so this unknown that everyone keeps talking about is scaring me.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community but I am sorry to hear about the journey you have been having. The waiting is hard but take this time to get yourself ready for the journey ahead.

Navigating the cancer journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' cancer type can help a lot.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated support groups (discussion rooms) but you don’t say what type of cancer you have but if you care to have a look through [THIS LISTyou will find all our many dedicated cancer support groups listed.

These groups are safe places to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

When you are ready to connect in with a group click on the [Bold Link] I have created above, then once you find the group for your cancer type click on the black banner that says [click to join] at the bottom, or the [Join] button under "Group tools."

You can then put up your own post when you’re ready by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title. You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post. You can also scroll through other members posts and click “Reply” to get involved.

Our Support Line teams are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00email or live webchat where you will find one of team there to help you out. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help.

  • Hi  and a second welcome to the online community

Everyone is different and there's no right or wrong way to feel.

Like you, I'm very much a get on with it kind of person and that's how I remained throughout my diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer last year.

Please ignore these people who are scaring you saying that "it will hit me in a few days" as you may well continue with your pragmatic approach as I did. Last year I met plenty of people who also didn't "lose it" but just got on with things. That's not to say that people don't get very upset but, if that's not in your nature, you shouldn't expect to.

    (((hugs)))
