Hi. I finished my 30 doses of radiotherapy on 5th April. Over the last few days I have been feeling really sick and actually being sick. The radio therapy was focused on my neck and upper shoulder area. I did have some sickness feelings during aswell. Is this something to be expected. thanks
Hi Dicko and welcome to the Online Community but I am sorry to hear about you being sick following your radiotherapy.
I had a total of 45 zaps over my treatments but had no sickness but it is often down to where the treatment is aimed at and what type of cancer you have.
It’s important to remember that the effects of radiotherapy keeps working for rather a long time…. you have basically been in a microwave and like food…… once it’s taken out the food has to sit. One set of 10 zaps I had kept working for over 16 months!!!
The Community is actually divided into dedicated support groups (discussion rooms) but you don’t say what type of cancer you have but if you care to have a look through THIS LIST you will find all our many dedicated cancer support groups listed.
These groups are safe places to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.
To find a group first click on the “Bold Link” I have created above then once you find the group for your cancer click on “Click to Join” when the black banner appears or “Join” under “Group Tools” (this all depends on the device you are using)
You can then put up your own post when you’re ready by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title. You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post. You can also scroll through other members posts and click “Reply” to get involved.
Our Support Line teams are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00, email or live webchat where you will find one of team there to help you out. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.
Do get back to me if you need further help
Hello Dicko
I had external beam radiotherapy ( although to my pelvis) I had a lot of nausea during it and it did continue for some while after. My radiotherapist was able to prescribe something to help and also was able to give me dietary advice which did help. From what I was told at the time some people do experience nausea with radiotherapy and because the radiotherapy keeps working for a while after the treatment has ended sometimes the side effects can continue. I was told to expect any side effects to get worse for the first 2/3 weeks after treatment finished and then they would gradually settle. I am now nearly 7 months post radiotherapy and still get the odd day with a bit of nausea. Mine was mainly nausea although there were a couple of times I was actually sick.
