Hi in January my husband was diagnosed with Bowel cancer and after many scans they found it had spread to his liver … he starts chemotherapy on the 24/4 . We just starting to learn about the side effects and to say we are worried is a understatement…

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis. A cancer diagnosis like this in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time but reaching out to the community will give you the opportunity to ask questions and getting support from others who are on the ‘exact’ same journey.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you consider joining our supportive Bowel (colon and rectum) cancer and Liver, secondary cancer support groups. These groups are safe places to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same journey.

When it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting family and friends you may also benefit from joining our Carers only support group where you will connect with others navigating the same support challenges.

To join a group first click on the “Bold Links” I have created above then once the group page opens click on “Click to Join” when the black banner appears or “Join” under “Group Tools” (this all depends on the device you are using)

You can then put up your own post when you’re ready by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title. You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post. You can also scroll through other members posts and click “Reply” to get involved.

Our Support Line teams are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00email or live webchat where you will find one of team there to help you out. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help.

  • Hi Katie8608. My story is very like yours. My husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer on 3rd January, which had spread to liver, but also to lymph, lungs and peritoneum. He started chemo on 14th March but only had one cycle when he got infection which led to a week in hospital and then obstruction which led to surgery. I know how negative this sounds, but actually we have been so encouraged by the care and excellent response of everyone who has been involved in looking after him. I have had to learn a very difficult lesson of not racing on ahead but taking one day at a time. Chemo was scary before he had it and then he was so well looked after and prepared for potential side effects, it actually was a precious time for us when we got to be alone together. We are determined to enjoy every day we get to be together and have found that weare stronger than we thought. You can do this.

  • Hello I’m new here my husband was diagnosed this week with bowel cancer that has spread to his liver. We meet to discuss treatment next week but to say I’m scared is an understatement. I lost my Dad to Prostate cancer. And just worried about our two young daughters and what the future holds. I think you only take it one day at a time and try to focus on the now.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to you but sorry to hear about your husbands diagnosis.

Please do consider joining the groups I have highlighted in this discussion thread as these groups will help you connect with others navigating the same journey.
