Supporting my mum with unknown cancer

My mum was told she had suspected ovarian cancer a couple of months ago and had a very extensive surgery to remove what they could.

We got the results last week.. it was isolated to her ovary which is good but it’s secondary and they think it originated somewhere else in the body.. but don’t know where. There was an added complication that it disintegrated when they were removing it.

Has anyone had an experience with cancer of unknown source? We have no idea what we’re dealing with which is so difficult and I’m mad that they told her at the time of the operation that it went smoothly with no complications. I would have thought the disintegration would be a complication!

  • Hello Emdb5

    Welcome to the community.

I am sorry to see that your Mum has been told that she had suspected ovarian cancer that they think originated somewhere else.

It must be a very worrying time for you and it is natural to have questions and I found that posting in the online community to share experiences with others really helped me.

There is a group in the community for cancer where the primary source is not known. You might like to have a look.

There is also an Ask the Nurse section that I found helpful for medical questions about my treatments. I understand that it must have been concerning to be told about the complication.

Finally we also have a group that is for people who are experiencing caring/supporting someone who has cancer. I have put the link if this is something that might be of help for you.

I hope that these links may help but please ask if you need anything else.
