Diagnosed yesterday. Bewildered.

In shock. GP told me yesterday I have prostate cancer following a blood test. We weren’t even looking for this. GP says I need to wait 4 weeks and have the blood test done again before I can have a referral to urology. Does anyone know why? Should I think about going privately?

What about cancer-related counselling? Suggestions?

Anyone in a similar position but further down the treatment road up for a chat with a newbie?

  • Hi Tony,

I'm a newbie to and would be happy to chat with you when it's convenient for you. I am sure that a lot of the questions/queries/bewilderment you have I have been through at the start of this year and would be happy to share. Reply tomorrow and we can catch up in the next day or so.

    Cheers

    Andy

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I remember very well that feeling of shock when you've just been told that you have cancer. Hopefully you'll find, like most of us, that once you have a treatment plan in place you'll feel more in control.

The online community is divided up into different support groups, I'm going to recommend that you join the prostate cancer group as this will give you the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and get support from people with the same type of cancer as you.

To join just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here, and join in with existing conversations by clicking on reply.

As for cancer related counselling, Macmillan have teamed up with Bupa to offer up to 6 free counselling sessions. You can read more about that by clicking here.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • This is so helpful. Thanks for taking the time to give this advice. I really appreciate it. I will follow your suggestions. Have a wonderful day.

  • Yes please, Andy. How are you fixed for Monday or Tuesday evening.
