Hello everyone, my father was diagnosed with cancer in December. He has had several exploratory operations to try to locate the primary site which involved tonsils out, deep biopsies etc in his mouth and throat. He’d not eaten since January and has been fitted with a gastro tube. He was therefore not on top form when he started his first round of immunotherapy 3 weeks ago.
He suffers a lot of pain in his face and neck and has zero energy, which has meant he hasn’t been able to shave. Does anybody know of any organisations out there who are specialist barbers and would treat him gently to try and even hand trim his beard with scissors?
he has suffered facial palsy too and I know a tidy up would really boost his confidence at this challenging time.
thanks

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your dad was diagnosed with cancer in December and that he's suffering with a lot of pain in his face and neck.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups, I'm going to recommend that you join and post in the head and neck cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support from others. There may well be others in that group who can help with your question about specialist barbers.

Another group which might be able to provide help around a specialist barber is the carers only group. It is also a great group to share your worries and emotions and to give and receive support.

To join either or both of these groups just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here, and join in with existing conversations by clicking on reply.

It would be great if you could pop something about your dad's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Thank you so much   I will definitely do what you have suggested later this evening. I feel like I’ll be on here a lot!
    many thanks
