Dad just diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer out of the blue, feeling lost!

My dad got the news on Friday that he has cancer all over his body, originating from the bowel. He only went in to hospital on Wednesday with a suspected strangulated hernia. He was told on his own that it was terminal, max of 12 months and only palliative care. He was then discharged and was told the doctor would call us, but not heard any more, except for a colonoscopy booked next weekend. So we are feeling very lost, no support, lots of unanswered questions.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read about your dad's recent diagnosis and know what a shock it must be for the whole family.

As you know, the online community is divided up into different support groups and I can see that you've already found and joined the bowel cancer group which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support.

When you feel ready to post there just start a new post in the same way as you did here. You can also join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could pop something about your dad's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
