Hello to you all. My husband is only 56 and we’ve only spent 25 years together. We’ve got 2 daughters still living with us in their early twenties. We’re all mainly in denial still and I assume that’s our brains/ minds way of helping us cope with this frightening experience. So far we’ve managed 39 days of continuing to live the life we need to. My husband retired from his self employed construction job 2 weeks ago and I left my carers job last year due to mild bi-polar and nervous breakdowns. My husband always wanted to retire early, and it’s so lovely and special to be able to spend all my time with him. I sincerely hope all of you can cope and have plenty of comfort and TLC.

  • Hi   and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your husbands diagnosis.

A cancer diagnosis in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time but reaching out to the community will give you the opportunity to ask questions and getting support from others who are on the ‘exact’ same journey.

You see that the Community is divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you consider joining our supportive Gullet (oesophagus) cancer support group. This is a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same journey.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Bold Group Link I have created above and join the group. You can then introduce yourself by putting up your own post or replying to existing posts.

When it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting family you may also benefit from joining our general Carers only support group where you will connect with others navigating the same support challenges.

Our Support Line teams are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00email or live webchat we also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help.
